What happens after a refund is issued?
Whether you paid with a credit or debit card, PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Klarna or another payment service, once a refund is issued by iFixit for any reason, it is always applied back to the original payment method.
In most cases, once you receive a refund notification from ifixit, we have released the funds and and the transactions is complete on our end. From that point, your bank or payment provider controls how and when the refund appears.
How refunds are handled
- iFixit authorizes and releases the refund to the original payment method.
- Your bank, card issuer, or payment provider applies it according to their own policies.
- You will see the refund either on your statement, in your digital wallet, or applied toward your installment balance.
Credit or debit cards
- Refunds are sent back to the same card number used at checkout.
- If your card was canceled or replaced, your bank usually routes the refund to your new card or account automatically.
- Only your card-issuing bank can confirm how it was handled
PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay
- Refunds return directly to the payment service you used.
- The service may apply the funds to your balance first before sending them back to your linked card or account.
Refunds on installment services like Shop Pay Installments, PayPal Pay Later
- Refunds are sent directly to your installment provider.
- If you still owe money, the refund is usually applied to reduce your balance instead of being sent to you as cash.
- If your balance is already paid, the provider may transfer the refund to your card or bank account.
